Established Idea & Influences

My story line will be based on the cell cycle of Eukaryotic cell, I will go into detail about Interphase, which would include the explanations of what happens during the different phases (G0, G1, S, G2) then have a brief overview of the M Phase (Mitosis). This is to commit to creating a 2 minute animation, as I feel it would be too long if I were to go into more detail about Mitosis and the different phases within it. In order to achieve a good explanation of the cell cycle I wish to have a voice over.
In terms of the art direction I want the camera to focus in the center where the animation itself would occur. I would like my designs to be illustrative and colourful. But most of all I want the style to be quite simplistic.

Here are some videos I looked at for influence:

I like the smooth transitioning and the pace in these videos which is an element I wish to include in my animation, I feel the way in which the topic of each video is explained makes it understandable to the audience especially the younger demographic. The combination of music, a voice over and sound effects makes the video very easy to understand and learn.

Animation Showreel

This is my animation showreel based on all of the work I have achieved so far in animation class. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the crit as I am away, however I hope you enjoy it :)

Concept Art

I wanted to have a a clean simple background, In contrast to the colourful cell designs which would appear in the center, this is to make the audience focus purely on the animation which would represent the cell cycle of the Eukaryotic Cell.

Organelle Designs

I started looking into geometric shapes as reference for my designs, which ultimately lead to this outcome. I still however would like to work on these. the first design starting from the right is a mitochondria, a nucleus and a  centrosome with microtubules.

Structure Of The Cell

I decided to change the colour of the cell structure to red as I feel it would be more visually compelling would appeal to the younger demographic. I wanted to start my animatic with a sphere which would transition into the second image which would show the organelles inside.

Eukaryotic Cell Designs

As a result of the influences I was looking at I decided I wanted my cell designs to break away from the natural form of the eukaryotic cell, I thought it would be quite interesting to have this spiral form which would morph from a sphere. When I explain the M phase of eukaryotic cell, this design would help to explain what the chromosomes would do inside as mitosis occurs. More designs to be posted up soon!

Experimenting in Maya: Morphing shapes

As I want to involve morphing shapes within my art direction for my animation, I decided to experiment with it a bit in maya

Ideas & Influences

Exploring Ideas

My idea is to use morphing for my animation. My aim is to appeal to the age range as much as possible and by doing so I want it to be very visually compelling so I thought it would be a good idea is to use lots of dynamic geometric shapes representing the cells which move and morph accordingly to the description of the cell cycle. I also want it to be quite bright and colourful to appeal to the audience.

Adobe After Effects Tutorial

In todays lesson we learnt how to import layers from photoshop into after effects, I chose a photo-my older brother, and made certain elemens of his face move. The lama in the background was used for unexplained reasons.
