Progress on my final concept

After a talk with Phil today I realised that some elements didn't fit in with the perspective with the room such as the desk, it was originally too low, so by using the perspective grid it helped me understand my space a whole lot better. I also realised how adding something to the foreground directs the attention of the viewer to the space and it doesn't make the space look too distant to the audience as it had previously. Thanks Phil! The foreground element of the shelf would be a good place to put my hero prop (amulet) by resting on an object, an ornament in relation to the voodoo, superstitious  scary vibe. At the moment the object on the shelf is starting to look like a miniature grim reaper which I think would add a nice effect to my space- it would signify the death of his fiancee. To reflect upon my character, I started adding voodoo dolls to the shelves and added more clutter to emphasize my characters motives.
I did want to originally experiment with other colours, other than green as I used intensively in my last project, however the colour does fit the mood really well. I was going to use blue but this gave a feeling of loneliness and sadness, something I didnt want to express entirely in my space. I think the use of green gives a mysterious vibe to the audience, and relates to the voodoo aspects of my character. But it also gives the feeling of melancholy which would express my characters mood.
I will look into adding more detail, more voodoo dolls on the shelves, more clutter and more lighting, and also adding the amulet to the object.

Lair concept
I decided to change the idea for lair concept, I think I was thinking too hard about how I would come about creating a lair which suggests a voodooist environment. So I decided to think about more about what my character would do in his lair- he would research non-stop, obssessed about finding the murderes that killed his wife, he wouldn't sleep until he gets his revenge. So from his motives, I have the idea in my head to create an office-type layout specifically for research. Now, to express the voodooist aspect of it all I would include things like voodoo dolls,  the design that is drawn on the ground for the ritual performed in voodooism, and possibly chimes/dreamcatcher to suggest his superstitous nature. These elements could show that he is experimenting with voodoo equipment in order to find out who he is, and what he is capable of- this would make his lair more of an experimentation room, as well as a room of which he researches in. It will also include notice boards filled with newsletters and pictures, piles of boxes and letters stacked in corners in relation to his suspects he is hunting down. I want the lair to be messy, to show that he is obssessive about what hes trying to find out.

Hero Prop designs
Thumbnails 4-14

These are drawn thumbnails for my amulet, I was trying to make a voodoo related amulet, so I incorporated a design aspect from the ritual of voodooism-this is shown in design 5, behind the gem. It represents the crossroads between Earth and the spirit world, I think it works along the design for the amulet as it reflects upon my characters possessed nature. I personally like 5 and 7 the best so I worked on them in Photoshop.

Character illustrations

Rather than creating an influence map first, I started designing straight on photoshop, this was because I didn't know what to look for as influences, but as I was designing I realised what I wanted to portray in my illustrations and I knew what images to look at for reference.

My obvious strongest influence was the hulk - this is because I liked the idea of the transformation from human to monster, a nice aspect in which I wanted to use in my illustrations.

I wanted to keep his 'human' look quite casual as was known to be quite a laid back, liberal before his incident. My main goal was to portray his grief within my designs to reflect upon his voodoo possessed nature to which I think I have achieved through the use of distressed features.

Character Profile:

Hero Prop-Amulet

I chose the amulet for my hero prop, as I feel it would relate to my character more-its use is to help him keep the bad spirit away from his thoughts in order to protect him from getting possessed. I want the amulet to be a pendant for a necklace as the weight of the amulet would be suited to wear across the neck. I also want to incorporate voodoo-type designs/engravings within my prop, and possibly beads.

Influences for my secret lair

This Influence Map represents my characters working space, a place he goes to research further into investigations. Since he is a super sleuth I want his secret Lair to be an office, so within this influence map  I looked at offices that would express his wealthy nature, and I specifically picked those which seemed hidden like the top left image, the structure of office is formed to look as if it was built underground.

This video shows a clip from Pirates of the Carribean 2 in which a group meet a woman to solve their mysteries. The environment of which the woman is shown in expresses the objects and arts of voodooism, the location is in a natural habitat, and is inside a swamp/shack, the natural elements of this interior reflect upon the culture of voodooism in terms of the rituals they perform. The dimly lit room expresses a scary and mysterious vibe, a vibe of which the magic of voodooism might create.

In my lair I want to include voodoo artifacts, taking influence from the pirates of the carribean link I wanted to use candles to create the voodoo atmosphere, and small objects such as the voodoo doll. The bottom left image of my influence map, shows the markings that voodooist marks on the floor when performing the ritual, something that I will consider using in my designs.

As shown I decided to write down my thought process when looking at these images in Photoshop. From looking at the link of POTC2, I was inspired to locate my lair in a forest which expresses my characters hidden nature, a lair in which no one would ever look for-sounds appealing. The two top images show the influences I would like to use for the exterior-although I'm not necessarily designing the exterior, I still want to get an idea of whats outside my lair, so I can reflect the surroundings into my interior when designing it. As for the 3rd image I annotated, I really like the spirit element, however I'm not sure it will tie together very well when I create this on maya..hmmm...

Initial thoughts for Hero Prop:
I want my character's hero prop to reflect upon the magical qualities that my character has, or something that marks his possessed nature. The use of the hero prop would be to help him investigate and solve crimes, but the object would have something dark and powerful about it.
My ideas so far:

This amulet will help defeat his possessed nature, and rid all bad thoughts that the bad spirits might bring. It helps him sustain as himself and offers him protection to bad spirits.

Magnifying Glass
The magnifying glass has more reference towards him being a sleuth, it has the power to look into people souls, and allows him to see the one thing a person truly desires at that moment in time. This allows my character to know a person's initiative when he investigates a certain person.

Crystal ball
The crystal ball will help my character determine people's fates, which allows him to look in the future and see how a certain situation/crime would go, which offers him a chance to change it for the good.

I wanted this object to be voodoo related in some way, as there has to be a reason or a story of how my character could have got it. I'm thinking it's because after he was possessed, he looked into finding help particularly someone in the voodoo religion. While meeting this person, she/he offers there help by presenting him with an object in which might help him.
In terms of the back story, I feel the amulet would be suitable for my character, as it would seem like a helpful piece offering from the person that my character had met. However I like the idea of the crystal ball, and the magnifying glass as it reflects upon his super-sleuth characteristic.
Anyone have any ideas of what to go with..? Or any other suggestions of some other hero prop that might suit my character?

Initial Thoughts Of My Character:

After a conversation with Phil, I started to actually think about my character and realised I needed to create a back-story for him. Ideas are still swimming in my head at this moment to do with my character, however I do like the idea of him coming from a non-voodooist background but his interest in voodooism, particularly haitian voodoo had drove him into a voodooist environment which involved a ritual, or perhaps a ritual of which he created that only involved himself which went terribly wrong. This ritual could have made him want to contact the spiritual world in order to talk to his lost one (This being a reason of why he was so interested in voodooism in the first place). However he came across the wrong spirit which ends up possessing him, and infecting my character with dark magic. Over a certain amount of time learns how to control his possessed nature, which only left him with the spirit's voodooist magic and dark, powerful powers to which he uses it for good, and to solve mysteries and crimes (without knowing I used a harry potter/lord voldermort reference). I want him to be undercover, and want him to keep his power hidden, as I want to avoid the whole generic investigator/detective character, as discussed with Phil, 'sleuth' seems to mean someone whose instincts fits a role of a detective, but it isn't necessarily his profession/job - basically, an amateur detective.

Similar Character Roles in Movies:

Harry potter

Figure 1

As mentioned before, theres a harry potter and lord voldermort reference in my initial thoughts for my character profile. This being the dark powers of which Harry has, which was transferred by the dark lord voldermort, in this specific image it shows the effect of the connection that they have between them, and shows how harry is almost possessed by him. Throughout the series it shows the struggle that harry goes through in order to keep voldermort out of his mind to protect himself, and shows how he uses the powers of voldermort such as speaking parseltoungue and powerful magic for good.

I want to express this connection that harry and voldermort has, through my character and the bad spirit, I want his powers to be seen as a gift but also a curse which he can find to be uncontrollable at times- as shown in figure 1.

Figure 2

A comedic TV series which involves a group of teenagers who get powers from a strange storm while doing community service. I like the idea that their undercover and no one knows of their powers, they use it for good, and sometimes for selfish reasons. These young characters seem to have the roles of imperfect heroes, a role of which I think could fit the characteristic of my character.

Jumper-David Rice

Figure 3

David rice in Jumper has the power of teleportation, there isn't too much of a story to this film however I like his attitude towards his power in public, it suggests that he is no more than anyone else. This aspect of his character would fit in the role of mine, as my character would have no reason to gloat or be entirely happy with his power, as the effects from it made him suffer, and in some way would make his attitude to life more care-free.

The Hulk

Figure 4

The hulk isn't seen as hero, when his transformation takes over him it turns him completely different however when his rage doesn't get the best of him he is seen as the good guy. His power is a curse, and I want my character to see and understand the bad side of it, this affects his view of life and makes him care-free,  and in a way liberal, his fearfulness comes from this, and makes him determined and confident.
